What happens when America starts listening again?

I've never considered myself a career politician, because I'm not one. I'm an American who has spent most of his adult life serving other people — sometimes in a Marine Corps uniform, sometimes behind the counter of a Post Office, and plenty of times in between.

My journey began in the Marine Corps, where I learned that leadership is earned through service, discipline, and commitment. It carried me through decades with the United States Postal Service — from city carrier to supervisor to Postmaster — which gave me something few jobs can: a front-row seat to the daily lives of the American people. Every mailbox tells a story. Every neighborhood has challenges. Every community has strengths. The Postal Service doesn't simply deliver mail — it connects people.

But I've never been just a résumé, and here's the part I want you to know:

• I shipped out to boot camp in April 1981. For thirteen weeks, a young recruit named Drew Carey stood one man away from me — long before he became a famous comedian.
• In 1983 I was scheduled to return to my unit in Beirut, Lebanon before the barracks bombing happened. I wasn't there when it occurred — but it shaped how I understand service and sacrifice for the rest of my life.
• Like many who served at Camp Lejeune, I've faced the long shadow of contaminated water — I've beaten bladder cancer twice. I'm still standing, still moving forward.
• I've driven a Disney bus, a school bus, a taxi, and an Uber. I've managed movie theaters, run pizza businesses, owned a franchise, and worked in banking. I got into computers when they first reached the public in the early 1980s.
• For six months, I was homeless — while still going to work every single day. I didn't read about the problem. I lived it.
• Now I sit in college classrooms surrounded by students young enough to be my grandchildren, chasing a 4.0 with a Marine's stubbornness and an old man's sense of humor.
